That evening she curled up after dinner with a novel—a spy thriller. Erasmus lounged on the rug in front of her and Siegfried played with his mirror. Herbie, as usual, wasn't terribly active, but he looked content investigating a shell Hannah had put in his terrarium.

Hannah was just coming to the conclusion of a particularly hair-raising chase sequence when the front doorbell chimed. Instantly Erasmus leaped to his feet, his shaggy body tense, ears cocked. He issued his standard warning bark and strode aggressively to the door ahead of his owner.

"Who is it?" Hannah called, her hand on the knob.

"It's Doug, Hannah. Let me in. I have to talk to you."

Hannah backed away from her side of the door as if it had grown alarmingly hot. Doug Scoville? Here at this hour? "What do you want?"

"Hannah, please let me in. I just found out you were back in town. We have to talk. I'm sorry about what happened. I came by to apologize for that incident at the office. That's the only reason I'm here, Hannah.

I just want to say I'm sorry."

With a sigh of resignation and irritation, Hannah opened the door to reveal the good-looking man with the chestnut-brown hair and green eyes who had been directly responsible for causing her to lose her job.

It wasn't until she saw the strange glitter in his gaze and the too-steady way he held himself that she realized he'd been drinking.

Erasmus growled.
